Protest against possible release of Raymond Davis
Jamatud Daawa organised rallies outside mosques after Friday prayers and public gatherings in major cities including Lahore. Leadership of religious and religio-political parties addressed the participants of these rallies. The speakers demanded transparent trial under law of the land and exemplary punishment to Davis.
In Lahore, Daawa held a demonstration at Chauburji Chowk after Friday prayers that was largely participated by activists and people from various walks of life. The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with writings against the US and gory incident of killing of Pakistanis at the hand of Raymond Davis. The participants chanted slogans against the US, Pakistani government and Fauzia Wahab. The participants also burnt the US flag to express anger and convey public aspirations to the world community.
Jamaat-e-Islami held a protest demonstration outside Manawan Police Training Centre that was largely participated by political activists and general public. Ameer JI Lahore Ameer-ul-Azeem, ex-MNA Hafiz Salman Butt and Omar Hayyat Bajwa led the demonstration.
Addressing the participants, Azeem said that the JI would continue struggle with the public support till expulsion of the last US man from the country. He urged the rulers to take a firm stance on the issue and flatly refuse the US regarding trial against Raymond Davis. He stressed upon criminal proceedings against Davis and exemplary punishment to him. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf took out a rally from Mozang Chowk, the spot where Faizan and Fahim were gunned down by Raymond Davis, up to the US Consulate on Egerton Road. PTI Punjab President Ahsan Rasheed and Lahore President Mehmood-ur-Rasheed led the rally in which political activists including women were participated.
The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with the demands of hanging Davis, arrest of the killers of Abadur Rehman and no to the US dictation.
Police barricaded the road to the Consulate, disallowing the protesters to get close to the building. The demonstrator then burnt effigies of John Kerry and Raymond Davis as well as the US flag.
PTI leaders chided the rulers for not showing ‘courage’ before the US officials and pleading the case of paying blood money to the heirs of the youths killed by the US citizens. They held the government responsible for the suicide of Shumaila, the wife of Fahim, too.
They said the party with the help of the masses was ready to pay the bereaved families manifold more than what the Americans could pay as compensation and pledged that no compromise would be made in the Davis case.
