CANCER DEATHS

MULTAN,Feb 5th:The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation organised public awareness lectures at Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre to observe the World Cancer Day. Speaking on the occasion,
Director SIUT Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi said since we started Urology Department, we started treating patients of renal, bladder and testicular cancers. Medical Oncologist of SIUT Dr Najeeb Naimatullah said that 40 percent of patients suffering from cancer could be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment. He said in 2010 over seven million people died of cancer in the world. Every year this number is increasing. He said cancer screening is very important before symptoms appear. Dr Mutahir Tunio, Radiation Oncologist of SIUT, said more than 60 to 70 percent of deaths occur because of heart and cancer diseases. “Major causes of cancer are smoking and consuming paan, Chaalia, Gukta etc,” he said. He said sensible choice of food and quitting smoking can prevent cancer. Dr Amir Maqbool said head and neck cancers are the sixth most common cancers in the world. Tobacco smoking increases 85 percent chances of cancers of head and neck. He said early detection and treatment could cure the cancer. He advised to avoid using tobacco and alcohol products. Dr Asad Shahzad of SIUT said blood in urine is red flag sign, so one must seek help of urologist or a general surgeon immediately. Urinary bladder cancer is the second most common cancer of genitourinary tract, he said. Meanwhile, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) President Prof Dr Idress Edhi while talking to Daily Times said in today’s science, merely timely diagnose of cancer can prevent the patient from its consequences
