FARE INCREASED

MULTAN,March 2nd:The private bus and wagon-owners have announced 10 to 15 per cent increase in fares at inter-City routes across the South Punjab on Wednesday.The decision would hit hard the millions of daily commuters since the transporters are not in control of the authorities.The transport owners said that the raise in fares would be applicable from Wednesday (today) and the decision has been made following the raise in the petroleum prices and unavailability of CNG.All Pakistan Transport Owners Federation Multan Chapter at a meeting here on Wednesday unanimously decided to raise fares at inter-City routes.However, the transport authorities concerned were not consulted regarding the decision, the sources in transport sector stated. The minimum fare has been set as Rs 30.
The transporters maintained that they have converted their buses from diesel to CNG with the investment of millions of rupees and the government had promised to subsidise them.They said that CNG was not available and they were facing losses of millions of rupees. Few companies were minting money in the business of petroleum and gas, they added.
According to the transport owners, the increase would also be applicable for the transportation of goods. Taking advantage of the situation rickshaw and taxi owners associations also decided to raise the fares.
The transporters rejected the criticism regarding fare increase by stating that they were already facing losses due to availability of spare parts at high rates and over-burdened by government taxes and undue challans. On the other side, millions of daily commuters were unaware about the sudden decision by the transporters.The people were of the view that over-charging was being made immediately by the transporters when the govt announced raise in POL prices.The people condemned the decision and said the govt had totally failed in controlling the inflation in all sectors.They said that recent increase in petroleum products and fares were the gift of the democratic govt for the masses.
The private transport plying on intra-City routes using CNG fuel have started overcharging despite the decrease in gas prices, also the stop to stop fares at routes would not be followed by the ratio of 10 per cent, a daily commuter commented.
According to the list, fares have been increased on all routes originating from Multan such as  Lahore , Karachi, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sadiqabad, Vehari, Bahawalpur, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Peshawar, Mardan, Dera Ismail Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalnagar, Khanewal, Muzaffargarh, Gujrat, Khushab, Rajanpur, Okara, Lakki Marwat, Bhakkar, Sukkur, Quetta, Looralai, Sialkot and Mianwali.
The fares of Lahore by Rs 50, Karachi by Rs 150, Faisalabad by Rs 50, Sadiqabad by Rs 30, Vehari ,Mailsi, Rangpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur by Rs 20, Islamabad/Rawalpindi by Rs 150, Bahawalnagar by Rs 50, Khanewal by Rs 10, Muzaffargarh by Rs 10 and Sukkur by Rs 100.
