PARENTS ARE BEING FLEECED

MULTAN,Feb 26th:Parents in Multan have called for establishing a regulatory framework to keep check on private educational institutions' fee structure which has been the main hurdle in access to quality education.
Parents have claimed that not only the fees are high but these schools go on collecting money from their pockets on one pretext or the other, making full use of absence of any fee structure regulatory body."Private institutions regulatory authority do exist but it has not been empowered to have check on its fee structure, depriving many parents to send their children to a good private school," said Saeeda Fatima whose two children study in a private school.
She said a student of class four in Beaconhouse school system had to pay Rs 5500 on account of fee per month, however, she added, she was satisfied with the education standard there. But a vast majority of people cannot afford the fees demanded by the schools as the fees increase by Rs 1,000 every year, she said. Most of the private schools have become money minting machines and charging extra fee and there is no regulatory framework to keep check on their fee structure.A mother of a child, Fahd Bashir who study in a leading private school said "I got admitted one of my children in leading private school and others are compelled to study in average institutions being unable to bear their educational expenses".Majority of private schools are charging fees in thousands of rupees which is only affordable for the elite class.
Beside study expenditure, the private schools extract funds for several occasions, which is very hard to manage for the people who hardly bear the fee expenses, she said. Rukhsana, mother of four children said "the private schools are charging in thousands which is not affordable for us.
The difference between the quality of education and expenses in different private schools create a sense of deprivation among those students who cannot afford to study in better school, she said, Talking to newsmen EDO(EDucation Multan said that the government did not give him the powers to keep check on the fees charged by the private schools.Existence of isolated parallel systems of public and private education in the country is a cause for concern as it creates inequitable social divides.
